INTRODUCTION

 

Mission:

 

                    The Department of Pathology is devoted to the study of causes of   diseases for the diagnosis and management of illnesses and for the     investigation of the mechanisms and pathogenesis of diseases. The      Department carries out its patient care mission by assuming responsibility for      the clinical laboratories; its faculty conduct  diagnostic work ,research ( basic   and applied) , and offer major teaching programs at the Undergraduate          medical student level.

The Department provides clinical laboratory testing for Mayo Hospital and other   Allied hospitals –allied to King Edward Medical University.  Approximately 1 million tests are performed each year. Committed to providing a broad array of state-of-the-art, cost-effective testing’. The faculty at department of Pathology regularly translates developing technology into routine practice both as new tests and as better versions of existing tests.

          The Department teaches Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Haematology and Chemical Pathology to undergraduate students of MBBS, BDS and Physiotherapy. The programmes are being developed for post graduate training in Clinical pathology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Haematology, Histopathology,   Cell biology and molecular genetics

                   Faculty research interests span a broad range and include, stem cell          biology, tropical medicine, microbial pathogenesis, molecular diagnostics,      structural biology, and biomedical engineering. In addition to under graduate       teaching and training the department provide graduate training leading to   fellowship of the college of physicians and surgeons of Pakistan in   Haematology and, Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology.

Quality Policy and Quality Objectives:

 

          To impart effective and efficient education quality, laboratory services and

          technical expertise.

 

a).     Education.

 

i).       The under and postgraduates trainees should be satisfied with the teaching and attitude of every staff members in the Department of Pathology King Edward Medical University, Lahore.

ii).      Education and training given to the students should be aimed at

          Enhancing their skills and inculcate the tendency towards

Research.

iii)               Education programs should be subjected to improvement by regular revision of curriculum.

                   iv)      Update of knowledge through continuous medical education by                          modern teaching techniques.

 

b).     Patient Care Services.

 

i).       The patients should be satisfied with every interaction with the

          staff members of the department.

ii).      Suggestion of the patients should be valued and implemented.

iii).     Needs of the patients should be met with utmost priority

                             through institutional and community resources.

 

c).      Diagnostic  Procedures.

 

i).       Every diagnostic test be performed with utmost care,

          precision and accuracy.

ii).      Innovation in diagnostic facilities must be an on going

          process.

iii).     The errors must be immediately recorded, discussed and

          rectified.

iv).     Each staff member must strive for enhancement of their

          skills and proficiency.

v).      Medical ethics must be practiced in every aspect.

vi).     Job description should be clearly demarcated and

                             understood.

                   vii).    All assignments should be goal oriented.

 

 

d).     Staff Behavior.

 

i).       Every staff member should be polite and helpful towards the patients.

ii).      Staff members must exercise economy of time effort and

          money.

iii).     All patients should be treated equally.

iv).     Discipline and punctuality should be maintained.

v).      Staff members should have problem solving attitude.
