        Haematology section

Haematology section of King Edward Medical University, Lahore not only caters for the patients of various medical, surgical and oncological wards of Mayo Hospital but also the patients referred by far flung areas as well as the secondary care hospitals. Complete blood examination, coagulation profile and bone marrow aspiration/trephine biopsy form the main bulk of work load. Other tests like Barr body detection, LE cell preparation, FDP’s, Osmotic fragility, Hain’s test and Coomb’s test are also routinely performed.

The vast increase in the knowledge of pathogenesis and management of hematological malignancies has made the laboratory practice of Haematology a challenging job. This section not only aids in the diagnosis of various malignancies both adult as well as paediatric but also helps in monitoring of disease pattern. Many patients of various bleeding disorders referred by medical wards as well as specialties are benefited by coagulation screening performed by competent doctors. Bone marrow examination is an important tool for diagnosing various diseases and staging of malignancies. Its importance in assessing the remission of disease cannot be denied. Various special stains are also performed.

Haematology as a clinical discipline has expanded tremendously making the hematology laboratory a high dependency unit of Pathology Department.
