Histopathology and
Cytopathology
This section receives on average 8000 – 9000 biopsies per
year. These biopsies are referred by all surgical units of
Mayo Hospital including neurosurgery, orthopedics and pediatric
surgery. In addition, two big hospitals of Gynecology and
Obstetrics (Lady Wellingdon and Lady Aitchison Hospitals) send
their biopsies to the Department. As Mayo Hospital is tertiary
care hospital slides and blocks for review of difficult or unusual
cases are also referred here. Out of total biopsies,20-30 % are
small biopsies whereas others are big surgical
specimens.
Cytopathology is a relatively new and challenging subspecialty. It
includes fine needle aspiration biopsies from different sites as
well as microscopic examination of different body fluids. The
number of FNACs performed per year is approximately 2000. Most
common sites are thyroid, breast and lymph nodes. In addition,
slides/smears of ultrasound and CT guided FNACs from deeper
tissues are also received here for reporting.
Major chunk
of cytologies are the Pap Smears. In addition fluids from various
body cavities, bronchial washings and brushings are received and
reported.
